Cooking on Vacation

I am a person who loves to cook on vacation.  My golfing friends always travel with their golf clubs, but I travel with my kitchen spice collection and garden herbs. Everyone needs a hobby. We are at my beautiful house in the mountains, and this morning I’m having fun planning tonight’s dinner. We enjoy going out to lunch and driving or hiking around during the day. Our house is on top of a very large mountain and to get there requires navigating long twisting roads that should be one way but aren’t. We pretty much have a no driving after dark policy, which means dinner at home.

Cooking in vacation homes is something of a sport for me. I love to be in the kitchen in our mountain house, but my other favorite vacation house to cook in is my friend’s house in Monteagle. The kitchen is the size of a postage stamp, and the house is shared by a number of family members, which means you never know what will be in the pantry when you arrive. One time there were six bottles of Montreal Steak Seasoning and they were all open! That inspired us to create smashed new potatoes with Montreal Seasoning - still a favorite.

Last night we made a yummy Alfredo pizza and had ginger snaps, chocolate, and figs for dessert. Vacation houses allow you to have unusual menus. We got to share leftovers with our raccoon friends. Do not tell the bassets, they would never forgive us! Today I’m off to take pictures of some of my favorite food destinations in Gatlinburg. Moonshine jelly anyone?
