I did not make pepper jelly. I did host an accidental luncheon. Here’s what happened. I had a picture perfect day planned of antiquing with the Marys, and a grown-up lunch with wine! The antiquing went extremely well. (See goat – made in Italy!) We were definitely ready for a glass of wine and a gossipy lunch at one of Green Hill’s newly re-opened bistros. It did not go well. Our waiter had an IQ matched only by his shoe size and the personality of a pit bull raised with rattlesnakes. After promises made of items ordered but not delivered then …. well, never mind, who hasn’t had a restaurant experience gone awry? To make a long story short, we paid our bill and left. Hungry.
My porch called us to come lick our wounds and have a relaxing snack. We opened some wine and I quickly made a favorite arugula salad with garden arugula that might soon be suffering from the predicted frost.. I added a pretty goat blue cheese that we bought in the mountains, figs, almonds and crackers and we had a feast. We topped it off with chocolates and called it a day.
The Marys went home, one to entertain a bunch of Sewanee Angels visiting for the weekend, and the other to feed a lot of rabid Auburn fans. I think the Sewanee dinner went well, but the Auburn boys had failed to figure out the intricacies of the pig in a blanket and the rotel had not fared any better. Thank heavens for wonderful women, a good porch and a bottle of wine.
