A Month of Pie

IMG_1921

I don’t know what it is about pie, but somehow it seems to have been the September focus in our house. Yesterday was Sammy’s birthday and instead of cake, he asked for a birthday pie! That seems crazy to me. Somehow “Let them eat pie!” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it. But if he wants a pie that’s what he gets, and WOW what a pie it was!

My favorite pie story comes from a friend who grew up in a family of four. When her mom made a pie – she cut it in four pieces, one for everybody. My friend thought it was in very poor taste when she went to a neighbor’s house for dinner and that mom cut the pie in six pieces. Shocking!

I tried to think about Sammy’s favorite things to put in a pie, but was spared too much research when a friend delivered a beautiful bottle of Honey Jack Daniels. Well  yum! A Bourbon Buttermilk Pie was just the ticket. My newly turned 21 year son was just horrified that I would dump Honey Jack Daniels in a pie so if you feel the same, or lack such generous friends, you can substitute another bourbon, even one without honey and you can’t really lose. It’s a delicious pie. It’s sort of like a chess pie only, well, it’s not. It’s custardy, with just a special like twang that makes you say, “What is that fantastic taste?” I thought it would make a nice breakfast this morning, but that idea occurred a little too late and I’m just now finding an empty pie pan in the sink. Next time I’ll hide a bite away; you should too!
